Dining with a UNESCO View: Best Pasta in Suwon, Korea (Wednesday Haenggung-dong)
Aloha everyone! ๐บ
Whenever I plan a short getaway to Suwon, finding a great place to eat is always my top priority. This time, while searching for the perfect dining spot in Haenggung-dong (the trendiest neighborhood in Suwon), I discovered a hidden gem called 'Wednesday' (์ฌ์ฆ๋ฐ์ด).
Word on the street was that this place offers a fantastic view of the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress wall, making it a famous romantic date course. Naturally, I went with high expectations!
The Magic of Suwon Hwaseong & Haenggung-dongBefore we head to Wednesday for dinner, you must know about the stunning backdrop: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fortress was built in the late 18th century and is considered a masterpiece of Korean military architecture and history.
Right next to the fortress lies Haenggung-dong, often called "Haengnidan-gil." It is one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Korea right now, where traditional Korean houses (Hanoks) have been transformed into stylish cafes, boutiques, and restaurants. Walking along the fortress walls at sunset offers a breathtaking view that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Wednesday is the perfect spot to soak in this historic view while enjoying a modern meal.
It was raining heavily on our first day, but that only added to the romantic and moody atmosphere of Suwon. It truly is a beautiful neighborhood with charming alleys everywhere. We finally found the iconic red door of 'Wednesday' and headed upstairs.
A Breathtaking View of the Fortress Wall
The moment you step inside, your jaw will drop. The view of the ancient fortress wall right outside the window is absolutely stunning! It was my first time dining in Suwon, and I couldn't believe I found a restaurant with such a historical and romantic backdrop.
I highly recommend making a reservation in advance, especially if you are planning a date or a special family meal. There are about three tables right by the window. However, even if you sit against the wall, the fortress view is still beautifully visible from almost everywhere in the dining room.
Not only was the view spectacular, but the staff was also incredibly kind and welcoming. Seeing my name handwritten on the reserved table instantly melted my heart.
The Menu: High-Quality Italian at Reasonable Prices
You can easily order using a QR code on the table. Considering it's located right in front of a major tourist attraction, the prices are extremely reasonable:
Caesar Salad: 15,000 KRW
Polpo (Signature Grilled Octopus): 21,000 KRW
Pastas: 18,000 ~ 22,000 KRW
Prime Chuck Flap Steak: 38,000 KRW
They also offer various highballs and four types of wine by the glass, making it a perfect spot to wind down after walking along the fortress wall.
What We Ordered: A Feast for the Whole Family
We started with warm, crispy whole wheat bread served with a unique combination of Maldon salt butter and maple syrup. It was the perfect comforting start on a chilly, rainy day.
1. The Signature 'Polpo' (Grilled Octopus)
This is a must-order. The grilled octopus was unbelievably tender—so soft that even my child, who usually finds octopus too chewy, ate almost the whole thing! It sits on a bed of sweet carrot puree and a creamy, garlicky aioli sauce.
Mom’s Tip: They usually sprinkle red paprika powder on top, but noticing I had a child with me, the thoughtful staff served the powder on the side without me even asking. Talk about top-tier service!
2. Thick & Creamy Carbonara
If you love your pasta thick, rich, and creamy, this is for you. It’s packed with bacon, and when you mix in the egg yolk and cheese, the creaminess goes to another level. My kid absolutely devoured it. Again, the staff kindly served the black pepper on the side for us.
3. Wednesday Signature Lasagna
My husband is a huge fan of meat ragu lasagna, and this one did not disappoint. It felt like a labor of love—homemade, deeply flavorful, and packed with way more meat than tomato sauce. It’s a very hearty and filling dish.Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit in Suwon
From the lovely staff to the romantic atmosphere, delicious food, and that unforgettable UNESCO fortress view, everything was perfectly harmonious. If you are looking for the best pasta or a romantic date spot in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, Wednesday is the place to be.
I fell in love with this neighborhood and will definitely be coming back on a sunny spring day!
