Where to Eat Fresh Winter Sashimi in Seoul: Garak Market Yeongjae Susan(Songfa)

Aloha! 🌺 It’s Jihye in Seoul.

What is Garak Market?

Before we dive into the food, let me introduce you to Garak Market. It is the largest wholesale market for agricultural and marine products in South Korea. Think of it as a massive food hub where the freshest ingredients from across the country gather every single day. For travelers, it’s a must-visit spot to experience a vibrant, authentic Korean market atmosphere and enjoy premium seafood at much more affordable prices than in tourist-heavy areas.

Beautiful sashimi flatter from Garak Market Yeongjae Susan

After catching a movie in Songpa, I headed to Garak Market to pick up some fresh sashimi for my family. My go-to spot is always Yeongjae Susan. Since they are a verified partner of the famous seafood price app 'In-eo-gyo-ju-hae-jeok-dan,' the prices are transparent and very reliable!

A "Tasty Aquarium" for the Whole Family

Garak Market is a great place to visit with kids. My child called it a "Tasty Aquarium" because of all the fresh sea creatures! From premium Snow Crab (King Crab) at the best prices in the market to fresh sea squirts, sea cucumbers, and abalone—they have everything.

Winter Special: Yellowtail (Bangeo)

A fresh platter of Yellowtail, Flatfish, and Salmon sashimi.

Since it’s winter, we ordered the Small Platter of Yellowtail + Flatfish + Salmon (70,000 KRW). Even the small size is incredibly generous, weighing over 500g!

Dining Options: Take-out or Dine-in?

One of the best things about Garak Market is the flexibility.

  • Take-out: You can have your fresh sashimi neatly packed to enjoy at your hotel or home.

  • Dine-in: If you prefer eating on the spot, you can head to the restaurants on the upper floors of Garak Mall. By paying a small "table charge" per person, they will provide space and side dishes so you can enjoy your seafood immediately!

Freshly Steamed Seafood

If you're buying King Crab or Snow Crab, you don't have to worry about cooking them yourself.

  • Steaming Service: Yeongjae Susan can steam your crabs right after purchase. You can take them back to your accommodation while they are still piping hot and succulent!

The Yellowtail (Bangeo) is at its peak oiliness and flavor right now. I love mixing soy sauce, gochujang, ssamjang, and wasabi for the perfect dipping sauce—a secret tip from my mom who grew up by the sea!

How to Find Yeongjae Susan (Very Important!)

Garak Market can be quite a maze, so please follow these steps carefully to avoid getting lost:

  1. If you are driving: Look for the "Garak Mall South Gate 1 (남1문)" parking entrance. (Note: This is different from the regular South Gate.)

  2. Parking Spot: Park near Column E09 on Basement Level 3 (B3).

  3. The Secret Shortcut: Take the Escalator (Moving Walk) right next to Column E09 up to the 1st Floor.

  4. Arrival: As soon as you step off the escalator on the 1st floor, Yeongjae Susan (Store #C-10) will be right there!

Marinade: 2 Tbsp Sake, 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce, 1/2 Tbsp Ginger Powder, a pinch of black pepper Batter: 1/2 cup (or more)...
