Ultimate Guide to Korean Grocery Shopping: Best Brands to Buy (Korean Pantry)

Aloha! 🌺 It’s Jihye in Seoul.

Many of my friends who want to cook authentic Korean food at home always tell me the same thing: "It's so hard to buy the 'right' Korean ingredients!" I completely understand. When you walk into a Korean grocery store (like H-Mart), there are hundreds of brands, endless types of sauces, and everything is written in Korean characters. If you can't read Korean, you might fall into the trap of buying copycat brands that taste completely different from the authentic ones.

Today, I’m sharing my ultimate guide to the most reliable and famous Korean grocery brands that you can easily find in the USA and globally. I will update this list often, so bookmark this page for your next grocery run!

1. The Global Giants (You Must Know These!)

Bibigo brand logo and a package of their famous Korean Mandu (dumplings).

Bibigo (비비고)

If there is one brand you must remember today, it's Bibigo (owned by CJ). They have taken the world by storm. They are most famous for their Mandu (Korean Dumplings), which are absolute perfection. You can also trust their pre-packaged Kimchi, seaweed snacks, and microwaveable cooked rice.

Jongga brand Kimchi in a pouch, the most popular store-bought Kimchi in Korea.

Jongga (종가 / 종가집)

Want to buy Kimchi but don't know which one is authentic? Just look for the Jongga logo. They are the #1 Kimchi brand in Korea. It tastes exactly like the traditional Kimchi you get in local Seoul restaurants.

Samyang Buldak Spicy Chicken Ramen noodles in various flavors.

Samyang (삼양)

Have you heard of the "Fire Noodle Challenge"? That’s Samyang! They are the kings of spicy noodles. Their Buldak (불닭) series is iconic. If you want a thrilling, spicy Korean experience, grab a pack of the original black Buldak or the creamy pink Carbonara Buldak.

2. The Traditional Masters (Sauces & Spices)

Sempio brand Korean soy sauce (Ganjang) bottles.

Sempio (샘표)

This brand makes the absolute best Korean Ganjang (soy sauce). Almost every Korean mom uses Sempio. Note that Korean soy sauce is different from Japanese soy sauce—it's richer, deeper, and generally not sweet. Sempio is incredibly reliable, and they rarely use MSG.

Chung Jung One O'Food brand Gochujang paste.

Chung Jung One / O'Food (청정원)

Globally known as "O'Food," this brand is a powerhouse for Korean sauces. If you want to make K-BBQ at home, their pre-made Bulgogi or Galbi marinades are fantastic.

Haechandle brand Gochujang (red pepper paste) and Ssamjang (BBQ dipping sauce) in traditional red and green tubs.

Haechandle (해찬들)

Haechandle is famous for Korean pastes.

  • Red Tub = Gochujang (Chili Pepper Paste): Essential for Tteokbokki or spicy stews.

  • Green Tub = Ssamjang (Soybean & Garlic Dip): We eat this as a dipping sauce for Pork Belly BBQ. Please do not confuse this with Doenjang (regular soybean paste)!

  • Pro Tip: If you see the word "국산" on the package, it means the ingredients were grown in Korea—a sign of premium quality!

3. Pantry Staples (Noodles, Flour & Tofu)

Nongshim Shin Ramyun and various instant noodle packages.

Nongshim (농심)

The absolute undisputed champion of Korean instant noodles. If you want the most authentic Korean ramen experience, grab the iconic red bag of Shin Ramyun (신라면) or the black bean noodles, Chapagetti (짜파게티).

Ottugi brand Sesame Oil

Ottugi (오뚜기)

Ottugi is famous for their yellow packaging. My mom is a fantastic cook, and she always insists on buying Ottugi for two things: Dangmyeon (glass noodles for making Japchae) and Sesame Oil (참기름). Their sesame oil has an incredibly rich, roasted aroma. And their sesame instant ramen id to die for!!!! please try!

Pulmuone brand organic tofu in a water-filled plastic container.

Pulmuone (풀무원)

This is the most trusted brand in Korea for fresh, organic products. If you need Tofu (두부) for your stews or pan-frying, Pulmuone is the best choice. They are very health-conscious and use clean ingredients.

Beksul Korean Pancake Mix (Buchimgae) in a paper bag.

Beksul (백설)

Beksul literally means "White Snow," and they started as a sugar company. Today, their cooking mixes are world-famous. If you want to make crispy Korean savory pancakes (Kimchi-jeon or Seafood Pajeon), you MUST buy their Korean Pancake Mix (부침가루) and Frying Mix (튀김가루). (Note: This is salty and savory, not for making sweet buttermilk pancakes!)

These are the staples I always have in my kitchen. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions while navigating your local Asian market! I will keep updating this list.

Mahalo! 🌺
