Quick & Easy Boneless Kalbi (Korean BBQ Yakiniku Style) (Korean Recipe)
Aloha, everyone! 🌺
There are a lot of different ways to cook beef in Korea. Most of the time, we use pear juice and soy sauce to marinate the beef and wait at least 3 hours to tenderize it. When I make traditional Bulgogi (Korean-style marinated beef), I also wait that long for a deeper flavor.
However, today, I will give you a much easier and faster recipe. You can eat this just 15 minutes after you marinate it, as long as you use fresh, good-quality beef!
You can cook it on a pan or a small tabletop gridiron with a portable gas burner. I usually cook it on the gas burner right at the dining table with a regular pan. Sometimes it is even more fun than outdoor grilling! Let's try this!!!
🛒 What You Need (Ingredients)
Fresh Boneless Kalbi (Boneless beef short ribs): 1.5 lbs
Mirin (Sweet cooking rice wine): 2 Tbsp
Shoyu (Soy Sauce): 3 Tbsp
Honey (or Sugar): 2 Tbsp
Sesame Oil: 2 Tbsp
Minced Garlic: 5 tsp
Black Pepper: A pinch
Toasted Sesame Seeds: 4 Tbsp (Optional, for garnish)
Ponzu Sauce: For dipping
👩🍳 How to Make It
1. Prep the Meat Cut and slice the beef carefully into bite-sized pieces so it cooks quickly and absorbs the flavor well.
2. The 15-Minute Marinade Put the sliced meat in a bowl with the Mirin, Shoyu, honey, sesame oil, minced garlic, and pepper. Mix it really well. Leave it at room temperature for just 10-15 minutes.
3. Tabletop Grilling (The Fun Part!) Cook the meat right at the table! It's time to turn it over when the juices start to bubble up.
4. Eat While You Cook! The best way to enjoy Korean BBQ is to eat it straight from the pan while you are cooking. Dipping the hot meat into Ponzu sauce gives you a nice, refreshing citrus touch.
(And remember: Kimchi cannot be optional! Kimchi is always good with any kind of meat.)
💬 A Little Note from Me
See? Now you don't need to spend so much money at an expensive Yakiniku or K-BBQ restaurant. It is as easy as it looks!
However, if you don't have sesame oil or Korean soy sauce in your pantry, you might feel this recipe is just impossible for you. You may still be struggling with the idea of buying Korean ingredients.
I absolutely understand your feeling. To make you feel better and more capable of making Korean food at home, I will go to a Korean supermarket and take pictures of the basic ingredients (with prices too!) in a few weeks.
Once you buy just 3-5 basic ingredients, you can literally make a lot of different kinds of Korean food. I can't wait to show you a real Korean grocery shopping guide soon!
