Cafe Julia at YWCA - Korean Inspired Menu

Aloha~
Today, I'd like to introduce you a quaint lunch spot in down town, Honolulu.
When I heard it's located inside of  YWCA, I couldn't excited more.
As they named the restaurant "Cafe Julia",
the famous Julia Morgan was the architecture of that beautiful building.
I think a female architecture built YWCA is such a meaningful fact.
Needless to say that the result is stunning.

Cafe Julia @YWCA Laniakea

Even before I visit, I've decided to order this Korean style grilled beef.
I have no idea what's the nationality of the chef
but I know kimchee and steak are match made from the heaven.

We had to wait for 10 minutes on the bench which was ok.
They have quite enough seats to handle many customers.

You can either seat inside of this classic building,

or seat outside to enjoy the sun.

Hello, menu!
Do I need to read you?
I've memorized already!!!! Bahahahaha!

I found that all the menus are kind of Asian fusion.
I'd like to try Loco Moco and Vietnamese or Filipino inspired menu next time.

They have daily special too.
We picked salad and pasta from them.

 Our drinks!!!
I tried lilikoi cooler which was really nice and tart.
Bit sweet for me but was very awakening :)

Grilled Korean-style marinated beef
This was really good.
Of course the kimchee was Hawaiian local style but was still good.
The kalbi meat cooked nicely and I liked that there was a lot of local vegetables.
I only can enjoy meat when I have salad or kimchee...
hehe this menu was just right for me!

Big Island made smoke pork spicy tomato penne pasta
The smoked pork was similar to the dried pork which
you can buy from Tamura's poke stand.
This pasta was ok. Not outstanding but worked great with our other dishes.

Korean inspired tofu salad
This salad, really cracked us up.
(Us means two Korean and one Chinese who used to live in Korea)
The chef used pepper sauce marinated dried fish on the top...
It's really common pupu in Korea.
Seriously nobody can charge for that in Korea since it's on the free pupu list :)
And dakuan? really?
However, the interesting part was the bottom.
It had sweet soymilk panna cotta bed under it.
All together it tasted quite nice.
After I've tried this menu, I wanted to meet the chef.
He must be super creative and not scared of trying new things.
And I'd like to hear other non Korean people's review for this salad~

This beef comes with one bowl of white/brown rice.
Their brown rice is really undercooked. Please go for white rice.

 Nom nom nom nom nom!!!

Finding a refreshing new place in downtown?
This place is a must try.
Thank you for reading.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend :)

Oh So Easy Bread Recipe(초간단 발효빵)

Aloha!
As a super lazy baker,
I've been looking for a perfect quick artisan bread recipe for a long time.
It is ironic that I don't like waiting and kneading but love homemade bread.
Especially, I really avoid artisan bread made from bleached flour.
However, unless I go to far far away(for me) Whole Food everyday,
I can't find any organic bakery around my neighborhood.

In fact, I tried many <no knead bread> recipes.
Those are nice but it has two down sides.

1. Have to wait for 4~6 hours in room temperature and 12 hours in the refrigerator.
2. Dealing with the super sticky moist dough is not easy.

I'm a person who's too excited about cooking who can't just wait, 'forget about the bread' and wait. I check the dough's consistently and imagine
'how it's going to look like?' for every minute which is the reason I stopped making 'no knead bread'.

Oh so easy!!!!

But...voila!!!
I found the perfect recipe today.
Only 8minutes knead, total time is 75min.
I assume this recipe is from US but I found it from Korean blogger.
Forgive me for not knowing the origin of the recipe and
can't giving the credit to the inventor of the recipe.
I've sent to the person aloha from my heart if it's enough for her :)

<ingredients>
Flour:3cup
Warm water:1cup
Sugar and dry yeast:1Tbs each
Salt:1/2Tbs

Make three holes on your flour and add yeast, salt, sugar.

Wait,,, Isn't this reminds you of the art???

Hmmmm....very similar ;)

Mix them well cause we don't like that face.

Add warm water.

Knead for 8min.

Cover with a hot steam towel and put it in some place warm.
I put it inside of a microwave. But don't start the microwave. You will burn your whole kitchen :(

You don't need to preheat oven.
Just place a big bowl of hot water on the bottom layer.

after 15min, the dough still doesn't look risen enough, but it's ok.

Shape the dough and scratch with sharp knife.
Put it in the oven, bake it in 400F for 30~40 min.

Tada!!!

What do you think?
Making a loaf of bread is that easy!!

I haven't found any recipe easier than this.
Do you agree?

The outside is super crunch, inside is moist.
When it's hot, you might feel it's too moist.(Which I like)
But after a few hours, you can even make a sandwich with this.

It's great with jam

or butter of course.

I will make more breads soon with nuts or olives~
Stay tuned for more fun recipes.
Mahalo for reading my blog.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Cocktail Shrimp (칵테일 새우)

Hi everyone!
Today I'd like to share my friend Helen's cocktail shrimp recipe.
I've changed some ingredients but the dressing is her original recipe.
(She uses less shrimp and iceberg lettuce)
It is sweet and sour and garlicky!!
Welcome to Korean food world, haha!
In Korea, we use garlic and green onion everywhere ;)

Cocktail Shrimp

After I came to Hawaii, I fell in love with shells, pineapples and conchs....
Anything related to ocean and the island looks awesome to me.
That is my excuse for buying another unnecessary conch shaped plate;)
It looks great with shrimp, right?

Bamboo knot skewers

I supposed to used this knotted skewers but couldn't find those on time.
You can use any kind of skewer or tooth pick.

<Ingredients - for 5>
lemon -5 thin slices
cucumber - 10 thin slices
shrimp - medium 10

<for the dressing>
vinegar -2Tbs
lemon juice, sugar, minced garlic -2ts each

Mix the dressing well and leave them in the refrigerator.
Steam the shrimp in the boiling water and store in the refrigerator too.

When you and your guests are ready, skew all the ingredients in order of
Lemon-cucumber-shrimp-cucumber-shrimp
Pour the dressing, done!

You see the fresh garlic on the top!!
It really is just right amount of garlic that everybody can enjoy.
It goes great with white wine.

Please try not over cook the shrimp.
Over cooked shrimp is bright white and dry.

Hope you enjoy this recipe.
and great thanks to my friend Helen for the awesome recipe.
Then you will be the first person to see my easy recipes.
Thank you for reading!
Good night to all!!

Strawberry Tomato Salad (딸기 토마토 샐러드)

Aloha everyone!
As I promised, I'd like to share one of the no carb birthday recipes.

Today's recipe is strawberry tomato salad.

Strawberry tomato salad

When I saw this tasting tray from Pier1 Import, I thought this was it.
It for what? That's the question I can't answer;)
It's cute tiny spoons and bamboo tray and everything of it was too lovely to resist.
Actually this thing is not for often use.(I found it when I get back home)
Since it has spoons, you might think you can bake mini dessert, but it's not oven safe.
So I decided to make some kind of appetizer which need tiny spoons.
Yes, this recipe is devoted to the tasting tray;)

<Ingredient>
sweet grape tomato halve- 1cup
strawberry diced - 1cup
cucumber - half
olive oil - 1Tbs
balsamic - 1Tbs
lemon juice - 1/2Tbs
salt and pepper

This Hofarm Kahuku Golden grape tomato is my favorite in Hawaii.
You should try it if you haven't tried yet.
This is as sweet as real grape and I love the golden color.
If you use regular red grape tomato for this recipe, it's not as pretty as this.

Halve them.

Dice the berries.

Get rid of cucumber seed and dice them.

Gently mix them with the dressing.
Sprinkle salt and pepper as you desire.

You have to leave it at least 10min in room temperature
or 30min in refrigerator, covered.
Because strawberries absorb the dressing the first and cucumber the last.
You have to wait until every single ingredients absorb enough dressing.

Done!!!

Super easy and pretty yet very delish.
The sourness, saltiness, sweetness will make a great appetizer.
Please don't make left over though. After a few hours, the strawberry turn to very mussy. You may chop fresh romaine and top with this salad for green salad version.

I hope you enjoy the recipe.
Please stay tuned for the next one.
Thank you for reading!
